Frequently Asked Web Site Design Questions by prospective customers
The following are the most common enquiries that we receive:
How much does a web site cost?
There are quite a few factors that are going to affect the ultimate cost of your web site. These factors include how many pages you are going to have, if you will sell products on your website, the graphic work involved, and how interactive your future web site will be. You may also need web hosting and domain name registration. The simplest way to find the answer to this question is 'talk to us'.
How can I make it less expensive?
A couple of ways. A new site should be like a 'school project' on your business. Type out as much information as you can and save it on a floppy. Collect as many high quality photographs as you can from past advertisement, brochures and competitors sites. Do a rough sketch on paper as to how you think the finished site should look.
I have a cousin that is 'into computers' who'll design it for nothing!
Home made sites will 'look' home made. The problem also arises when you want to update your site. Are you going to be able to call on them again and again to do this. To be honest, anybody can design a site, even using Microsoft Word. Unless it is professionally coded, and regularly changed and submitted to search engines, it will be like a poster nailed to a tree in the Amazon forest.
I already have a web site, is there anything you can do for me?
This is our major growth area. Sites that have a professional look, that nobody knows about, may as well not be there at all. Using our techniques, we can re-design or simply give it a makeover and eventually bring it from 'search engine obscurity'.
Do you design websites outside of Ireland?
Yes. We are currently doing a restaurant in Perth Australia.
How long does it take to have a web site designed?
The time frame is determined by the size of your web site, the complexity of your site design, and our current client design schedule.
What is a URL?
It stands for "universal resource locator". This is the address typed in to view your web page on the Internet. For example, you would type in www.AshbournePC.com to access our home page.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a specific web site address that you choose and register with 'The Internet'. Our domain name is "AshbournePC.com". When deciding on a domain name, it should be as short and as 'catchy' as possible.
Should I go for .ie or .com?
Definitely go for .com. In my experience, the .ie names are hard to get up in search engines as they are country specific to Ireland. .COM names are worldwide and thus get hit more quickly. New users to the internet associate .com with all addresses. There is also considerable 'grief' involved with registering a .ie name. One of the rules for .ie is that if there is a .com version of the name already cunducting the relevant type of business in Ireland, you can't register the .ie. For example if you register MobileTyres.com and your business is primarily a mobile tyre fitting service, then no Irish tyre company can register .ie. If you were a tyre company in Ireland and MobileTyres.com was owned by an american company, then you CAN register the .ie. Thus by registering your name as .com you are protecting yourself within Ireland.
What is site maintenance?
Maintenance is a fee paid once a year, to keep your site updated with new content that you provide. Most good web sites have new content updated regularly. Fresh content is what will keep your visitors coming back. In our case we charge a fee annually, this is charged one year after your initial site design cost. This also includes your name re-registration, search engine submission on a weekly basis, unlimited updates, and free submission to TheWeb.ie, our countrywide internet business directory.
Why can't I find my web site in the search engines?
Once your site has been submitted to the top Search Engines they may require several weeks, or even months to actually spider and list your web site in their directory. How fast your site is listed depends on each individual Search Engines database update schedule. Our average time is four weeks, because of certain techniques that we use. Beware of companies that pretend they are google, or are affiliated with google, that will claim they can get you to the top of Google. Nobody can control google.
Web Site Content - What Do I Put On My Site?
This is where our advice will come in. We will go to your company and approach it as if we had never heard of you. We will analyse exactly what people would expect to 'type in' to a search engine, to find your company. Your site should be like an interactive company brochure.
